An activity meant for friendly competition and to bring people from all different works and corners of life sharing a similar interest together, has been turned into an avenue for racial and violent attacks. In 2016 alone there 104 reported incidents of racism in sports internationally.
The attacks cut across all types of sports and both genders. A Serena Williams "fan" dressed up as blackface to the Australian open, New York Giants player Nikita Whitlock's home was burgled and vandalised with racial epithets like kkk, go back to Africa and the swastika symbol, Brandon Marshall and Colin Kaepernick receiving hate mails and death threat for peacefully protesting police brutality, Polish fans burning effigies dressed in traditional orthodox jewish attire and calling for violence against Jewish people, these and many more are such examples of racism rearing its ugly head in sports and its most prevalent in soccer.
Bodies have been set up to combat such cases of racism but with little to no success. Lets hope this 2017 we all learn to do better and work together to battle more important issues in the world.
