Famously known for his ship in a bottle installation on the fourth plinth in Trafalgar square, Yinka Shonibare artist extraordinaire is back again with the Globe Head Ballerina. Located on Russel street side of the Royal Opera House in Convent Garden, the installation which pays tribute to ballerina Mellisa Hamilton, features a life sized ballerina draped in rich and colourful prints implying African identity and a globe head encased in a snow globe.
The dancer rotates slowly capturing a moment from stage. Commisioned in 2012, the work is to remain in place for 5 years.
Yinka Shonibare was born in London, he grew up in Nigeria before returning back to the UK for his studies. His works often focuses on the issue of race, identity, globalisation, colonialism and class to name but a few.
